Animators of stop motion

 Joseph Plateau 

  • First person to prove to persistence of vision 
  • He was a profesor at the Ghent university in 1844
  • He was inspired by Michael Farady
  • He is known as the founder of animation

William Horner

  • He was born in 1786
  • At the age of 14 he was assistant headmaster at a Bristol school
  • 4 years later (18) he became headmaster
  • He founded a school in Bath
  • In 1834 he invented the Zoetrope

Charles Emile Reynaud

  • His father was a medal engraver
  • His mum was an artist
  • He was home schooled, and his mother taught him to draw and paint
  • He created the first projected cartoon called "Pavre Pirrot"
  • He invented the Pratinascope 

Eadweard Muybridge

  • He was born in Kingston, Surrey
  • He was a photographer
  • He is known as "The Grandfather" of motion pictures
  • He was the first person to create 'animal locomotion'
  • His first work was 'Horse in Motion' created in 1882
  • He invented the Zoopraxiscope in 1879


George Pal

  • He was born in Hungary on February 1908
  • He studied at the Budapest Academy
  • He emigrated to America at the age of 32
  • He worked for Paramount Pictures where he created a show known as 'Puppetoons' as well as creating the visual effects for 'The War of the Worlds'
  • He was known as 'The Father' of film making
  • He won an Oscar for 'Destination Moon'
  • He created the film 'Time Machine' in 1960

The Lumiere Brothers

  • Their father was a painter
  • They created films about everyday life
  • Their films astonished audiences
  • The height of their career was in 1895

Ray Harryhausen

  • He was fascinated by dinosaurs and fantasy
  • He went to Grammer school
  • He visited and exhibition many times in L.A. which inspired him
  • He fell in love with animation/film making after seeing the original 'King Kong'
  • His work inspired many directors such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Peter Jackson
  • He voiced the Polar Bear cub in the film 'Elf' which starred Will Farrel
 

Jan Svankmajer

  • He was born in 1934 in Prague
  • He attended the Applied Arts between 1950-1954
  • In 1970 he got married
  • He joined a Surrealist group
  • All his films are Surrealist works
  • He influenced the directors of such films as 'Saw' and 'Cabin in the Woods'
